Rainbow Reel Tokyo, formerly known as Tokyo International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, is one of the biggest and longest-running LGBTQ events in Japan. It was founded in 1992 with a mission to raise LGBTQ visibility and create a more diverse society through cinema. Held annually in Aoyama, the center of Tokyo's arts and culture, Rainbow Reel Tokyo has been attracting a wide range of audiences. It is an open space where people of all ages, genders, sexualities and ethnicities enjoy watching films together. The festival not only presents newest queer films from all around the world, but also hosts a Japanese shorts competition called “Rainbow Reel Competition”. Along with film screenings, there are various fun events such as talk shows, art exhibitions, staged performances and the official party “Le Grand Bal”.
